Well, almost a whole year since the last posting in this series and still, NOTHING has changed in Denver-area skating. Despite those who were upset with RST’s postings about the DJ situation and some claiming what was said only went up out of spite for how one of my relative-deejays was treated …… NOTHING has changed, people are still complaining, the crowd is still diminished, and the music selection offered up by DJ1 (KK) and DJ2 (BS) continues to be horrible.

 

I’ve gone to the rink 3 times in the last 6 months and each time I’ve gone, S.O.S. (and that doesn’t stand for save-our-souls).   Last month, a “true” skater was rolling around with her arms folded across her chest, a position many of us take when we’re mad. When I approached her about it, she said she was mad and had even heard from another skater that the deejays wouldn”t get away with playing such mess on the east coast.

 

Last night, another “true” skater said he only came because one of his partners called him and said he’d be there, otherwise, he was planning on sitting the night out. He outlined how, 2 weeks prior, he and another “true” skater sat down with DJ2 and discussed the music selection and suggested he stop playing the same songs every week and put in some effort during the week to plan out a fresh playlist for each Sunday. They were told, by DJ2 that he worked a day job, deejayed at other events, etc. and just didn’t have the time to put more effort into music for the rink.

 

Another skater, who also has only been to the session 2-3 times in the past year, said last time he went (a few weeks ago) it turned out to be “the trifecta”: a waste of (1) time, (2) money and (3) gas.  All I can say is “ditto”.

 

I never got around to doing my full series about what I’ve experienced over the years with Denver area skating, starting with the 2001 petition that more than 60 people signed agreeing that it was time for DJ1 to be replaced. Well,  more than 20 years after cofounding the adult R&B session, he’s still in place along with his sidekick DJ2, who has more than 10 years in the seat. It looks like neither one of them is planning on moving to the side even though all signs are there that it’s time for some new, fresh and probably younger blood to take over.

 

Kind of like if Mike Tyson were still trying to be king of the boxing ring in 2011 even though his time was up years ago but I guess the boxing world doesn’t have time to let a person’s ego keep them in the championship seat. If you don’t have the skills, you will get that you-know-what beat and the title given to someone else. Ain’t no way someone with bifocals, hearing aids, 35 pounds overweight, taking Geritol …. you get the picture, I’m sure …. would be allowed to hang on past the time. Not so in the world of skate deejaying in the Denver area. Not so.

 

Am very much looking forward to skating in Chicago at the Sherri’s Skate Productions event this month. I’ve been fienin’ for a good skate for more than a year and just can’t get no satisfaction anywhere in Colorado.

    This sounds like a real problem you guys are having. I haven’t looked into previous posts, but has anyone talked to the owner or manager about maybe moving DJ1 to day sessions or different nights. Seems like maybe he’s bad for business if people don’t want to make the trip to the rink if he’s there. Certainly an owner/operator should understand if its affecting his bottom line.

    yes C. the owner was approached prior to the first of these posts being put up – more than a year ago. he was asked to allow a different DJ to come in at least one sunday per month and one of his key responses was that if the dissension continued, he’d stop all the adult sessions. he said he felt he’d gone out of his way for different adult sessions and would just shut them down and replace them with roller hockey…. which makes him more money. he made it clear that the adult sessions aren’t what bring in his bread and butter.

    after that, i knew exactly what the deal was and that it would be a waste of my time to try to bring about any other kinds of changes with this monopoly of rinks or this skate night.

    Wow that’s too bad. The adult skate sessions are so vital to a rink, I’m sorry to hear that you guys are really in a position. Are there competing rinks in your area that you guys could try out?
